Palm Bay Honey Bee Nest removal from Tree

Palm Bay External Honey Bee Nest
Can you see the honey bee nest, exposed and in the palm frond? It looks like it has 3 'plates' of comb, and is what we consider an 'external' nest architecture.

Most European honey bees (the gentle, tame bee we keep in our white hive boxes) build nests inside cavities, such as hollow tree trunks and such. The African Honey Bee ( a wild subspecies that is illegal to keep here in Florida), readily builds such external nests. We now have so many wild African honey bees in Brevard County, that I tell beekeepers, if you want to catch wild bees, just put out empty cardboard boxes, as African bees will gladly appreciate your efforts and build a colony inside the box within a week or two!.

We are encountering more and more 'mean' bees in Brevard, and we even have some neighborhoods noted with higher than average numbers of Africanized Honey Bees, meaning we have to practice very careful methods, so that we don't threaten neighbors and pets.

If you have a colony of pest honey bees or any stinging insect, please give us a call or email. I am a stinging insect entomologist, with years of education, experience and knowledge and can provide you with a proper removal so you never have to deal with an infestation again. I carry all licenses and insurance to protect you, my valuable client. Beware of unlicensed operators, often beekeepers, that are trying to earn extra money by performing improper removals, resulting in mass sting events that threaten residents with sting risk liabilities and damaged premises.

Remember, bee removal is considered pest control, and any inspection, advice, or removal procedures require licenses. We have seen many citizens, wronged by unlicensed removals.  Don't get stung by an illegal operator, it could cost you thousands!

Please, don't attempt a Brevard County Bee Removal, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques. I've written 2 blog posts about these dangerous bee removals.. go here and here to read this valuable information.. It might just save you and your neighbors from getting stung or spending hundreds of dollars too much!

Melbourne Bee Swarm in Tree

Melbourne Honey Bee Swarm
Melbourne, Fla Honey Bee Swarm

Here's a cool photo of a  Melbourne, Florida Honey Bee Swarm removal we performed for a property management firm. Notice how 'bunched up' the bees are, in and around a palm frond. Hard to believe you are seeing about 20,000 bees!

Often, we advise homeowners to 'wait & see' what the swarm will do, as most of the time these swarms are just temporary bivouacs, where the bees are just hanging out while a dedicated core group of scouts is out searching for a permanent location to move the swarm too. Often, this permanent location can be in a nearby tree hole, building wall, soffit or attic, or even ground voids such as meter boxes.

If the swarm moves away in a day or so, groovy! You likely will never have to deal with a swarm again. If they hang around for several days, approaching a week, please call us, as the swarm may be establishing permanent digs, and once colony construction continues, a once seemingly gentle swarm can turn into a very defensive bee nest of tens of thousands of honey bees, defending their new home.

We are encountering more and more 'mean' bees in Brevard, and we even have some neighborhoods noted with higher than average numbers of Africanized Honey Bees, meaning we have to practice very careful methods, so that we don't threaten neighbors and pets.

Rockledge Fla. 'Killer' Bees Removal

Rockedge Fla Africanized Honey Bees Removal
I thought this was a pretty cool "Bees Eye View" picture of what we often encounter when working some of the meaner honey bees in Brevard County. They often will leave thousands of stingers in our suits, making our suits look like someone shook pepper over the suit! Look at the bee in the lower left hand corner!

We are encountering more and more 'mean' bees in Brevard, and we even have some neighborhoods noted with higher than average numbers of Africanized Honey Bees, meaning we have to practice very careful methods, so that we don't threaten neighbors and pets.

Apopka Bee Removal: A few Bees? Surprise!

We receive plenty of phone calls and emails, where clients see 'just a few bees', entering a small hole in a wall or soffit, or just about any other void-containing structural areas.
Just a few Apopka Honey Bees on a wall??

We always advise the client that these few bees may indicate a lurking surprise, possibly a nest containing up to 60,000 honey bees and hundreds of pounds of comb, pollen, honey and bees!

Yeah, this is is a pic of a typical bee infestation, this one was above the master bedroom, and weighed several hundred pounds. Not good...

Winter Park External Honey Bee Nest on Tree Branch

'Back in the day', it was very rare to find wild honey bee nests built 'externally', meaning the nest is hanging from a tree limb or some other surface. Most honey bee nests were, and still are, found inside voids, such as tree holes, nesting boxes, structural wall voids and the like.

Winter Park External Honey Bee Nest in Tree
So, several years ago, when we started encountering higher numbers of external nests as you see in the pic above, we knew our day of reckoning had arrived. You see, there are sub-species of honey bees that readily build external nests, and they are not the sub-species we have been farming for hundreds of years here in the U.S. No, these nests are usually built by the African Honey Bee. aka, Killer Bees, Apis mellifera scutellata .

These numbers of nests heralded a new era in feral honey bee management, as these critters can exhibit drastically different behavior than their gentle European bee cousins. For instance, minor disturbances, such as a squirrel running across the tree branch, can cause these bees to fan out over hundreds of feet, looking for the perceived intruders. Once found, these guard bees can sting, leaving their stingers embedded within the victim. The stingers exude alarm pheromone, wafting into the air, providing a target path for up to 50,000 other nest-mates to quickly attack the now hapless victim. Immense pain, unconsciousness and death can be the quick result.

Please, don't attempt a removal of bees, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

Tampa Honey Bees in a Tree-Hole

Tampa Killer Bees in Tree-Hole

Bees LOVE to build their nests in Tree holes.. the holes you see in larger trees, often where a limb used to be. Many trees are hollow inside and can have dozens of feet of a nice, insulated void for the bee colony to build it's nest of wax, pollen, honey and baby bees.
Tampa Honey Bees in Tree Hole

These nests can number over 50 thousand individuals, and often become rather ornery or flat-out mean, stinging people, pets and passer-bys.

Please, don't attempt a treatment or removal of these Tampa bees, as most are now Africanized, AKA "Killer Bees", and you can incite a neighborhood-wide stinging event that can last for days! We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

Daytona Yellow Jackets attack camera!

This was a fun one!

We performed a Volusia county Yellow Jacket wasp treatment and removal in a horse pasture. It was a very nice sized nest, and I thought getting some POV video from near the nest would bee very interesting.
Daytona yellow jacket wasp removal; POV video

As you can see, I positioned the camera very close to the nest opening and within seconds, hundreds of Yellow jackets were swarming around the camera, and actively stinging the black rubber and fabric parts of the lens shroud, handle, etc.

I hope to edit the camera video and post it, so stay tuned, as it should be WILD!!

his species is the Southern Yellow Jacket, Vespula squamosa. See our Yellowjacket pages for more info. These wasp nests can get HUGE, with numbers over one MILLION individuals. Here's a link to a video of us treating a large Yellow Jacket wasp nest..notice how many of these wasps are flying around! When you get a nest this size, treatments that your redneck brother-in-law recommends (like gasoline, kerosene, putting a bowl over the openings) simply do not work. (Read here why gasoline and kerosene should NEVER be used, anyway!). We have arrived at many, many jobs where clients have tried all these treatments and more, and STILL have the Yellowjackets, but now they've really made them MAD!!!

Protect yourself, your neighbors and your assets. Call us at 386.490.4541, 800-343-5317 or go here to submit a Quote request, for professional Volusia & Daytona Beach Yellow Jacket removal from the Stinging Insect Experts at ALLFloridaBeeRemoval.com

Ocala Yellow Jacket wasp nest

It's been an interesting spring for us this year.. Drought combined with a very mild winter has our stinging insects in a 'tizzy'.  Yellow Jacket wasp nests for instance, are still packed with virgin queens, which is VERY strange this time of year. Normally, these queens will leave the nest during November or December, and seek out a nice log to overwinter in. Then, at the start of spring, they search for suitable nest locations, and start new nests en-masse.

Ocala YellowJacket nest

This pic is typical for us. A modest nest opening, consisting of a 'paper-mache' that the wasps create from cellulose and saliva. Several guard workers, and a busy stream of wasps flying in and out of the nest openings. Doesn't look like much, eh?
Ocala Yellow Jacket wasp nest close up

Oh contrare... these nests can extend for several feet in diameter.. under the ground, and maybe two to three feet down. The wasps are very well adapted for excavating soil and building nests, and can number in the hundreds of thousands of individuals!

Bee Safe, contact us, the Stinging Insect Experts at ALLFloridaBeeRemoval.com 800-343-5317 for proper Yellow Jacket removal. Remember, our services are most likely cheaper than any Emergency Room Visit!

Palm Coast Honey Bee Swarm Removal

We perform bee and stinging insect work for the City of Palm Coast, and we were blessed yesterday with a fine looking honey bee swarm on a small Magnolia tree.
Palm Coast Honey Bee Swarm

Some neighbors were a bit concerned by this aggregation of 10,000 or so bees, so we were called to perform a removal. Luckily, as the bees were quiet and well behaved, we performed a live removal, and relocated the bees to our apiary in Flagler County.

Cocoa Bee Problem Solved

We perform plenty of Bee Removals in Brevard County, and solve many Cocoa Honey Bee Problems in houses, commercial buildings and just about anywhere you can imagine!
Cocoa Bee Problem Solved

Here is a pic of just some of the honey and brood (bee babies!) that came out of a large beehive that had been in a Cocoa Beach house eave for a few years.

Notice the light colored honey and comb. This produced some of the finest tasting honey I've ever found in a Florida bee removal ever! I've often noticed that coastal bees make very good honey, however we don't find edible honey in most bee removals, as it often will sour and ferment within weeks in our humid environment.

Please, don't attempt sealing of bees inside structures, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

Orlando Bee Hive Control

City of Orlando Bee Hive in Tree

This is a typical honey bee nesting site...the interior cavity of a tree. You can see the corps of 'janitor' bees out side the hole, working hard to clean it of microorganisms.  Most larger trees will have a hollow core, and it's a perfect, safe and insulated place to set up shop!

Orlando Bee Hive in Tree Hole
This Orlando Bee Hive had been threatening local citizens in a neighborhood, and because we are seeing higher numbers of Africanized Honey Bees, ( AHB or Killer Bees!), City, Town and County Governments have us perform proper bee removals & eradications in many locations so citizens can enjoy safe use of their streets and yards.

Folks are often surprised to learn that we are seeing increased numbers of mean, Africanized Bees in central Orlando and other Central Florida cities. These are not places to be trying relocations of honey bees. The sting risk to nearby humans and pets is significant. There are folks so allergic to venom, that one sting can send them to the Emergency Room! Some can even die from one or a few stings!
Please, don't attempt a removal of bees, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

The Villages, FL: Honey Bee Swarm

The Villages, FL: Honey Bee Swarm, 40 Ft. High

As one British Beekeeper friend told me: Buggers!!

The photo below shows a The Villages, FL. Honey Bee Swarm, perched high in a tree about 40 feet in the air. I had to use my telephoto lens to shoot it.
The Villages Honey Bee Swarm in Tree

Buggers, because this very large, very healthy looking swarm, issued from one of our honey bee hive boxes, in a yard we keep in Oxford, near The Villages, Florida. I was in the yard to perform maintenance and was to 'split' some of our hive boxes, partly in order to keep swarming from happening!

Swarming is simply the honey bee colony's way of reproducing. The Queen and about 10-20,000 of her daughters and sons, fly away from the existing nest, and land somewhere nearby, in order to figure out where to move to permanently.

When this happens , we lose a LOT of bees, the queen and a lot of honey making ability.

Buggers.

Please, don't attempt a removal of bees, even The Villages Bee Removal, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

Melbourne, Fla: Honey Bees Swarming Dryer Vent

Melbourne, Fla. Apartments: Honey Bees Swarming a dryer vent

This is a common situation for us in Spring & Early summer. Apartment home residents are suddenly sharing their living space with hundreds of honey bees. Management calls us (We perform property management bee removals for most of the Mgt. firms in Florida), and we find a honey bee swarm has moved in to the space AROUND the dryer vent.
Melbourne, Fla bees swarming apartment dryer vent

The first thing I check for is caulk or expanding foam, usually applied by a well meaning staff member in an attempt to block bee movement. But in reality, they've made the problem worse, by sealing Thousands of bees INSIDE the apartment home!!! Look closely at the photo above and you'll see the caulk.

Brevard County has had an influx of Africanized Killer Bees overtake the European races that used to dominate the feral populations. As such, Space Coast Bee Removals should only be performed by bee specialists that hold Florida Pest Control Certifications and are experienced beekeepers. Our firm owners hold Univ. of Florida Graduate Entomology degrees and are considered top bee removal experts by our peers, worldwide.

Please, don't attempt sealing of bees inside structures, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

Honey bees, both Africanized & European subspecies, often build their nests in wildlife nesting boxes. These are boxes that are specially designed for many types of birds, otters, and other wildlife.

Palm Bay Honey Bee Swarm Removal from Auto Salvage Yard

 Palm Bay Bee Swarm Removal

Bee swarm at Palm Bay Auto Salvage
This week, we have been getting many Bee Swarm calls in the Brevard County and Palm Bay area. Its a funny thing,  late winter is very slow for us, and we have to start getting ready, anywhere from  Mid-February thru Early April.

Bees will start swarming sometime during this period, and once they do, it's Game ON!, with us receiving hundreds of calls a day!

A colony of honey bees can be likened to an organism, and the prime directive of organisms is to reproduce--and that is what a swarm is!! Bee colony reproduction! An existing colony sends out maybe 20,000 workers, drones and the queen, to go find a new place to build a colony and thrive.

Most of the time, but not always, these swarms are relatively docile, and are transitory, meaning they will leave in a few hours. Please, don't provoke them into a stinging incident, by self treating yourself. We are seeing more swarms that become defensive, and they can deliver hundreds of stings within a minute.  Give us a call, and we'll help you determine if you should have us remove them. In most cases, you won't have to do a thing, but wave as they leave!

Folks, If you have a honey bee swarm, please give us a call to discuss your options. You may need to do nothing but watch these wonderful critters for a day or so, before they find another, permanent site. Or, in some cases, it's best for us, The Stinging Insect Specialists to remove them for you.

Please, don't attempt a removal of bees, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

Tampa Honey Bee Swarm

Tampa Bee Swarm!!!!

With such a mild winter the honey bees in Florida are starting to swarm. All over the Tampa Bay Area, existing honey bee colonies are growing in numbers, thus too many occupants. When this happens, the bees are waiting for a good rain, followed by sunny days with little wind.

Tampa bee swarm in a bush. Bees located in the Carrollwood area of Tampa, the main colony located only 10 feet from the swarm. Small swarms tells us this colony could be the African Killer Bee. African bees are know for their small swarms.

Clearwater Fl., Bee Removal from Tree

Clearwater Bee Removal from Tree

Large External Africanized Killer Bee Nest in Tree
Take a look at this very large "External" honey bee nest. It's a sight we see more often now, as most of our wild honey bee colonies are Africanized Honey Bees, otherwise known as "Killer Bees". This colony of bees behaved nicely for about a year or so, until one day, the yard crew suffered numerous stings. Luckily, no serious injury occurred..this time.

Orlando Honey Bee Swarm - Captured!

Orlando Live Honey Bee Swarm Relocation

We've been blessed with a mild winter, and our honey bees have been able to feed very well during this time, which means one thing: IT"S SWARM SEASON!!!!

All over central Florida, existing honey bee colonies are bursting at the seams, with too many occupants. When this happens, the bees are just waiting for a good rain, followed by sunny days with little wind.
Orlando Bee Swarm on Fence

We experienced rain last Thursday and Friday, and yesterday was blue skies and little wind, which caused this swarm to issue from a honey bee nest.

The queen landed on a fence, making it easy for me to capture, and move all her daughters into a waiting hive box. We came back later in the night to remove the box to one of our apiaries.

Good luck queenie!!!!  My son even helped with beekeeper duties!

Orlando Bee Removal

Honey bees will build nests just about anywhere, as shown by our technician, Jason Deeringer, who is also Vice-President of the Orange Blossom Beekeepers Association:
Orlando Bee Removal
This removal was actually TWO bee nests located under the same stilt house. One colony was very gentle..the other colony..not so much. It was extremely defensive and our technicians suffered many honey bee stings performing the removal. We collected samples and the bees tested out at near 100% Africanized Honey Bees.

Please, don't attempt a removal of bees, as they can be deadly, even swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect removal techniques.

We rescue a Port St. Lucie Family from Africanized Honey Bees

Our expert South Florida team, Alpine Farms, headed by Ronnie Sharpton, comes to the rescue of a family, unemployed and facing imminent danger from an Africanized Honey Bee nest on their house.

The local CBS affiliate covered this removal:

"PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Thousands of bees made their home on the outside of a Port St. Lucie house. But the residents of that home are struggling financially and could not pay to get the problem solved, until they called CBS 12.
Alpine Farms, an extermination company based in Palm City, saw our report on the bee invasion at the Gonzalez home. They offered to remove the hives free of charge.

Alpine Farms owner, Ronnie Sharpton, says the hive is difficult to get to because it's over a screened-in back porch that doesn't have a sturdy roof. He also says there is a 90 percent chance the bees are the aggressive africanized bees.
He estimates it took 40,000 bees six months to build the 60 pound hive.
"They are a lot more aggressive and in this case, they're more prone to nest on the outside," said Sharpton."

Sarasota bee removal

Bees will be swarming in a neighborhood near you:

Honey Bee Drone Comb; Sarasota, Fla.
This is wax comb from a recent Sarasota Bee Removal we performed today. The dark portion is mostly "drone" comb, reserved only for raising male bees, which are commonly called 'drones'.
This is a sign that honey bee colonies are actively building larger, in response to our recent warm temperatures.

Queens will be leading swarms in a couple weeks, looking for new sites to build colonies, and a healthy drone population assures that the queens will have males to mate with.
