This colony of bees started building this nest about 2 weeks ago, gaining entry through a tiny gap around a plumbing hose bib. A hole only needs to be 1/4" to allow bees enough space to enter voids such as this uninsulated garage wall. Within months, this space could be filled with a hundred pounds of comb, honey, pollen and bees. Yellow jacket wasps are opportunistic: They will gladly move into structures if humans are'nt using them effectively! This nest was found in an old Florida Fish camp in Davenport that had been abandoned for a short period

This species of yellow jacket is Vespula squamosa, the Southern Yellow Jacket, and it can contain hundreds of Queens, which allows the nest to grow into millions of individuals, and several feet in size!

Bees in a Pine Tree In Ocala, FL

Here is a nest in Ocala, Fl 15ft up in a pine tree. This was a large nest (15 shelves of honeycomb) and was very active. These types of ness are classified as external colonies because they create their nests exterior, unlike bees who will make their nests in voids in walls of knotholes. This nest started out as a smaller bee swarm, and in the last year it has blossomed into a dangerous, oversized nest with potential harm for surroundings. This nest is located adjacent to a large manufacturing facility AND a school!. Children run through this natural area, and it's a disaster just waiting to happen. So, we've removed the nest, in a manner that minimizes bee activity after the removal.  Here Is a huge African Honey Bee Nest in Kissimmee FL, as you can see it is very large and these are very hostile. To "save" this nest would not be practical because of the enormous size of the nest would be difficult because they are already established. Also to save this type of hive isn't suggested by the state of Florida because they can disrupt a normal European Honey Bee Colony.
