Bees LOVE to build their nests in Tree holes.. the holes you see in larger trees, often where a limb used to be. Many trees are hollow inside and can have dozens of feet of a nice, insulated void for the bee colony to build it's nest of wax, pollen, honey and baby bees.

These nests can number over 50 thousand individuals, and often become rather ornery or flat-out mean, stinging people, pets and passer-bys.

This is a typical honey bee nesting site...the interior cavity of a tree. You can see the corps of 'janitor' bees out side the hole, working hard to clean it of microorganisms.  Most larger trees will have a hollow core, and it's a perfect, safe and insulated place to set up shop!

Gotha Windermere Bee Removal in Cemetery Tree

Boy if these pics don't fit the bill..Here we are treating a Honey Bee colony residing in a Gotha or Windermere Fla., cemetery. The storm clouds were rushing in quick, lightning off in the distance, and a mean bunch of Africanized Honey Bees, (aka Killer Bees or AHB) were not happy that we were depopulating the colony.

Very dark and foreboding mood, as i suppose it should be as we are eradicating a colony of very interesting and beneficial insects. Merritt Island Bee Removal Bees in Tree Hole

Honey Bees really, really like to build nests in Tree Holes, the hollows that are in many of the larger trees in our landscapes. Ok, they probably don't "like" to build them, but tree holes are a natural, safe environment for honey bees and we find many pest colonies of bees residing in tree holes.

Now, many of our clients would like us to do a live removal, and relocate the bee colony to one of our apiaries. It breaks some hearts when we explain that the only way one can do a True Live Bee Removal from a tree hole, is to cut the portion of the tree away where the colony is located and then cut that portion open to get at the nest. Most clients really don't want to remove their trees, so the only option available is  to terminate the bee colony.

Some might ask, "Why don't you leave the honey bee colony where it is? After all we are losing bee populations, right? Well, yes we've had increased mortality in our managed honey bees, those that we keep in white boxes. However, most of the bees we encounter in yards, buildings, etc., at least here in Florida, are not bees that we really want to keep in our white hive boxes. Most wild or feral bees have 'mixed-up' genetics, and make poor candidates for serious beekeepers. Worse yet, the numbers of Africanized (or African, or Killer Bees) are shooting through the roof here in Florida, with increases in bee attacks occuring. Trying live removals of feral bees located in or around humans is frought with danger and liability risk. It's something that we are doing less and less of every day.

And leave that colony in the tree, and odds are, as the colony increases in size, your risk for sting incidents go higher too. Daily, we field calls from folks who suffer stings from bee colonies that were very docile. Something happens to make the colony more defensive and POW!, your Saturday morning chores are put on hold as you spend the weekend in the hospital, recovering from an overload of bee venom.

Gainesville Bee Control: 40 feet up in a Tree!

Sometimes we are called to scenes that are almost out of a movie, where folks get stung so badly by bees, that it's by stroke of luck that they survive!

The photo above illustrates one such event last summer in Gainesville, Florida. Tree surgeons were cutting down trees in a residential backyard and rope climbing in the trees when a honey bee colony located in the trunk of one tree was disturbed by the activity nearby. A climber was attacked by the honey bees, so badly that he couldn't yell down to his support crew, for all the attacking bees getting in his mouth, nose and ears.

Maitland: Mean Bees in Tree forces road closure

Bees LOVE Trees! We've all heard of the Winnie The Poo Bee Tree, right?
Well, this is one that Winnie had better stay away from, because it most likely houses African Honey Bees, aka Killer Bees! Jacksonville Bees in a Tree ( and lotsa Maggots too!!)

This photo is a closeup of small hive beetle larvae, aka MAGGOTS!!, on a tree's bark in Jacksonville, Florida.
We often see these leaving a a bee hive (colony, to be correct), when the bee colony is not doing so well. Usually, this happens when a well meaning client sprays the bee colony with over the counter insecticide. Or worse, when a beekeeper or pest control operator sprays the wrong spray.
What follows is often fodder for horror movies. Tens of thousands of small hive beetle MAGGOTS take over the weakened colony, and, in just a few days, their feeding spreads yeasts throughout the nest.
What happens when you combine yeast and a high sugar substance like honey??? Yep, you get fermented honey, and it ooozes down the tree, smelling and attracting all kinds of insects, including marauding bees from other colonies. These bees are lovingly called 'robber bees', and they can bee extremely ornery and aggressive. The sting risk goes sky high. Not a good scene, especially at this client's home, as she has two small doggies, who already have incurred $800 in vet bills because they are allergic to bees.
